Halloween 2012
Nils is a mummy, and Walter is a bat. (The same bat he was two years ago. It's a bit tight, but I'm surprised he could still get it on at all.)
Their dad took them trick or treating, and interestingly they got tired of it before he did.
Walter's costume changed at least 100 times until it was actually time to go, luckily he put together all of these costumes himself. He also has the next five or six years worth of costumes planned out.
Nils' costume was made by my very generous Mother in law who put it together while I was out of town.

Rodeo Day
The first graders at Nils school are having a Rodeo day today. They were allowed to come to school in 'cowboy' clothes, and this is the outfit Nils picked to wear to school.
When I dropped him off instead of saying "goodbye!" to me like he normally does, he giggled and shouted "Yeehaw!"

Bat & Dragon
I'm not sure what kind of pose Walter is doing, but it sure is something.
This is at the ward party; Nils is a bat (I couldn't get the ears to stick up very well), and Walter is a dragon.
One thing that is surprising to me is how consistent Nils is. I remember changing what I wanted to be for Halloween every hour or so right up until it was time to go. Walter shows signs of being like me (his range of options is still rather limited), but Nils decided he was going to be a bat a few months ago and has stuck with it ever since.

Fat cat in a little dress
My sister was talked into buying halloween costumes for her cats by one of our nieces. (I suspect it didn't take much work for the niece to accomplish this). When this sister came to stay the night at our house we tried the costumes on Theta. She was, as ever, very tolerant, even though she really really didn't like it. Poor cat.

Chin Beard
Lately Nils has been rather taken with beards. Making a 'beard' out clay, or other things laying about the house. So we made him a yarn beard. It had a mustache, but he didn't like that, so we took it off.

Halloween Preview
Tonight was the ward trunk or treat. We had a chili and pie competition. My pie won, to quote the judges, "hands down." The kids enjoyed frolicking about, Nils as a ghost and Walter as a fruit bat. Though I'm thinking we should add some blinky lights or something to Walter's costume. His all-black costume makes him hard to spot in a dark parking lot.

Strangle-Free Cape
One of Nils' friends is having a super-hero birthday party tomorrow, and Nils needed a cape. The thing I remember about wearing capes is always feeling like I was being strangled. So I made this cape to have straps that go across the chest & shoulders to hold the cape on, rather than tying around the neck.

Sometimes I'm just so clever I even amaze myself.

Costumes
Last night was the ward Halloween party. Nils was a dragon, and had a great time prancing about dragoning. It was pretty funny to me that he wanted to wear his church shoes rather than his sneakers because his church shoes were all black. I tried to talk him out of it, but obviously didn't succeed.
Walter was a robot, but all those the circuit boards and cables that I added to his costume made it rather heavy and he refused to wear it. Poor kid. His mom ruined his costume. He would have been happier with a plain old laundry basket on his head.

Over excited
I found out Friday evening something that I should have guessed. Nils' preschool teacher informed me that he had been telling her and all the kids at preschool that he was going to be a dragon for halloween, and that I was making him a dragon costume. This wasn't exactly true, I was intending on making him a robot costume as we have computer parts coming out of our ears around here.
So yesterday I started work on a dragon costume, I finished the wings and a tail. He wore them around until he was so tired that he fell asleep on the floor.
