Monkey see monkey do.

So Walter goes outside with a book and knocks the door until I go over and open it. When I open it he then does this (see picture) while mumbling. Finally he put the book down and said "please let me in."
He did this a few times, and I finally caught on when he said "Wilderness! cah cah rawr!"
